SVC will not be meeting in-person this Sunday

Hello Everyone,

We had originally planned to get together once per month and this coming Sunday, November 22 was going to be our next service. There has been a significant uptick in the spread of the virus lately and many businesses are pulling back to precautions taken back in the spring. Our in-person service is intended to be a celebration of our church as a larger body. A celebration would be a wonderful thing to have right now, but given that we already have a format to get together as a church that is safe, it is not essential that we get together as a larger body at this time. Therefore, for the protection of everyone, we will not be having an in-person service this Sunday.

We have already begun to make some plans for something we can do for Christmas that would be safe but also would not involve us all getting together indoors. As those plans develop further I’ll get that information out to you. We are also working on how we can help those in need this season as we have in the past. It may be different, but it should still be possible to help out safely.

THIS SUNDAY we will continue to meet online via Facebook Live and Youtube. You can access the service from the following links:

To the extent that you feel safe with people, I would still recommend that you get together with your S.M.A.S.H. group. At our house, we will still get together but will still try to keep a distance – and some may still wear a mask. It really is so nice to see people and it is still a great experience – even with precautions.

S.unday M.orning A.t S.omeone’s H.ouse allows you to connect with each other in ways you never could at a traditional Sunday service. If you haven’t joined a group yet, you can find one on the website at https://svclegacy.syvee.com/connect/get-small/. We would like to limit the size of these groups during the pandemic to less than 10 people, and we could already use a few more groups to start so that we can respect that figure and can get everyone connected. If you can host a group at your home, will you please contact either Chris or Eileen?

The Bible tells us that our relationship with God is not a solo venture. We were designed for community, fellowship, and relationships with others. But, it’s hard to make meaningful connections when we only see people in a large group on a Sunday, so at SVC we have made our goal to get smaller instead of bigger.

IN-PERSON – Finally, if you want to deliver it in person, the best way is to come to my house at 1930 Durham Rd in Guilford. Please, if you are giving cash make sure it is in an envelope and make sure I am home to receive it. We will sign the outside of the envelope together with the amount noted and I will get it to Bryan.

What’s with the anchor?

First and foremost, the anchor represents the hope, steadfastness, and peace we have through Jesus. Hebrews 6:19 tells us that our hope in Christ is a promise from God that we can hold onto “like a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls.” As a result, an anchor was one of the first symbols of Christianity – predating even the “Jesus Fish”. For the early church, an anchor was regarded as a symbol of safety. The anchor portrayed here also has some additional elements that are important to us. The mast for the center of the anchor contains an image of a cross, where our salvation was paid for. The circle at the top, when added to the cross represents arms open in love for each other and the community. The points on the ends of the anchor represent the two points of Jesus’ Great Commandment to all His followers: To love God and love others. Finally, the anchor is a friendly connection to the nautical community that we serve and are a part of – the Connecticut shoreline.
